Lamb

At Rhug we produces nationally award-winning organic Welsh lamb and mutton for our own shop, nationwide mail order service, Waitrose supermarket and a number of Michelin starred restaurants.

In total the farm produce about 4000 finished lambs a year.

Our breeds

The farm has three flocks. On the higher ground there are 400 Welsh ewes and 800 Cheviot cross Welsh ewes. A North Country Cheviot ram is used for breeding with our Welsh ewes and the ewe lambs are kept for our Cheviot cross flock. A Rouge De l’Ouest ram is used for breeding with these lambs to produce replacements for our two lowland flocks. All of the male lambs from the top flock are supplied as light and medium weight finished lambs.

The two lowland flocks have 1050 ewes and are mated predominantly with a Charollais or Texel lamb to produce medium sized and heavy lambs which we sell as finished lamb.

Who works with our sheep?

Robert Hughes
Robert is the shepherd for the Rhug flock - our lowland flock of ewes finishing 1200 lambs each year. Last year one of Robert's lambs won second prize at the Smithfield Winter Meat Fair.

John Dyke
John is the shepherd for the Tyn y Wern flock of ewes and finishing 1200 lambs each year. Last year one of John's lambs won third prize at the Smithfield Winter Meat Fair.

Gareth Williams
Gareth is our longest serving shepherd and runs the Parc Uchaf hill flock producing 1200 lambs a year. Gareth not only produces lambs for the butchers but also the breeding flock that supplies John and Robert. Gareth's lamb won the 2002 Taste of Wales Bronze award.
